St. Johns / University Park / Portsmouth Homes

bridgetoStJohns.jpgAs you head west in North Portland, onto the "peninsula" of north Portland, you'll hit, successively, University Park and Portsmouth, and then, at the end of the peninsula, historic St. John's.  St. John's is one of those little places where you could be completely self sufficient out of.  There's a brand new remodeled Safeway, a downtown with a decent size infrastructure that is seeing a major resurgence right now and in the last couple of years, and world class Pier Park, with 87 acres, a pool, a frisbee golf course and old growth redwoods.  St. John's also boasts (my favorite) bridge, the St. John's bridge, with some areas of the neighborhood having views that rival the Golden Gate.  St. John's has a yearly jazz festival in Cathedral Park, tucked underneath the bridge.  There is a movie theater and a McMenamin's pub, and as time goes on, more and more businesses keep opening up.

A huge draw of St. John's real estate is it's proximity to parks and green spaces.  Just across the bridge is Forest Park, home to literally hundreds of acres of trails and forest.  Across the bridge and up the road 5-10 minutes is Sauvie Island, a place where good childhood memories are made, with berry picking and pumpkin patches in the fall.  There are trails, beaches and tons of great biking areas.  It's really beautiful and peaceful.

Just like the rest of Portland, St. John's home prices have increased a lot over the last couple of years, but it is still possible to find a very inexpensive starter house here.  Over the last couple of years, I have helped many first time buyers find a great house here, and every single one of them has been happy with the choice to call this home.

WalktoColumbiaParkinN.Portland13.jpgUniversity Park borders Willamette Boulevard and is just south of Lombard.  This is a historic area based around what is now the University of Portland, and there are many fine properties in University Park mixed into this neighborhood, along with many smaller, cute post-war homes with their own charm.  Like other parts of North Portland, it is quieter here, but has a nice proximity to downtown, via Willamette Boulevard.

Portsmouth is further east, between the main areas of North Portland and St. John's.  It has some really cute pockets of houses, especially the Portsmouth properties that were built in the 30's through the 50's.  It tends to be generally a quiet place to live.  While not super close to any commercial areas, that's still relative, as it IS Portland, and nowhere are you more than maybe a 10 minute drive.

What's close?  On the eastern end of these neighborhoods, you are relatively close to the MAX line.  Bus lines run up and down Lombard, taking you into town and other areas. In St. John's, once you cross the bridge you can shoot all the way into town on highway 26, kind of a forgotten highway, and be in Northwest and downtown Portland in only 8 minutes.  This makes St. John's a great place for those who like a quieter lifestyle but work in the city.  Columbia Park is beautiful, and is in Portsmouth and just above University Park on Lombard.
